Parade Tremendous Success
STURGEON BAY - The 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote was celebrated Aug. 26 with a car parade through downtown Sturgeon Bay, which ended at Martin Park with the reading of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Folks from throughout Door County joined the festivities by decorating their cars, ringing bells and honking horns. The women wore white attire and large hats in memory of the 70-year campaign waged by the suffragettes to secure the state ratification of the amendment that prohibits states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to U.S. citizens on the basis of sex. The amendment was adopted on Aug. 26, 1920.
"We carefully planned a parade that would ensure the safety of everyone by keeping it limited to cars and asking everyone to wear masks and socially distance at the park afterwards," said Pat Scieszinski, chair of the League of Women Voters of Door County, which organized the event.
Along with her granddaughter, Scieszinski led the reading of the amendment.
"I am so pleased with the turnout for this," Scieszinski said. About two dozen cars and more than 50 people participated. Many of the participants remained in their cars during the gathering at the park.
